ALEXANDRIA, VA (October 17, 2011)—Praxis announced today that its Spacecraft Communications Payload (SCP) has successfully completed on-orbit tests on board the TacSat-4 satellite built by the US Naval Research Laboratory and sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and the Operationally Responsive Space Office. The SCP is the spaceflight element of the Ocean Data Telemetry Microsat Link (ODTML) communications system, which provides message data to/from small buoys that drift along the world’s oceans, monitoring temperature, salinity, and currents. The SCP allows scientists to access timely environmental information via the Internet, often in near real-time, from areas far beyond the geographic reach of land-based communication systems. During the on-orbit checkout, the ODTML system also demonstrated the ability to contact multiple satellites simultaneously.
With SCPs operating on two satellites (TacSat-3 and on STPSAT-2) in low earth orbit and one satellite (TacSat-4) in a highly elliptical orbit, ODTML now provides global coverage and as many as nine contact opportunities per day. Information collected by all three satellites is downloaded through ground stations located in Alexandria, Virginia and Finneyagan, Guam.
"Under the TacSat-4 program, Praxis is demonstrating how the ODTML system can be used to collect and disseminate tactical sensor data," said Eric Vandersall, Principal Investigator. "We're working closely with the Office of Naval Research, the Naval Research Laboratory, and the Operationally Responsive Space Office to demonstrate this capability as a low cost add-on to existing and newly developed sensor systems."
Development of the ODTML system began in 2002 with funding from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Continuing efforts are funded under the ONR’s Innovative Naval Prototype (INP) program.
