ODTML is a lightweight, low power UHF satellite or Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle (UAV) communications system designed to extract data from widely distributed sensors such as ocean data buoys or unattended ground sensors. Praxis developed the ODTML system under a Small Business Innovation Research contract with the Office of Naval Research.The ODTML system consists of a Spacecraft Communications Payload (SCP) that resides on a satellite or UAV and a Ground to Space Communications Terminal (GSCT) that is integrated with individual ground sensors or ground sensor networks. Both the SCP and the GSCT are designed for low cost, minimal power consumption, light weight, and simple interfaces to the host platform to minimize integration impacts and costs. Each SCP or GSCT unit is self contained and requires only a power feed and, in the case of the GSCT, a simple RS-232 or RS-423 serial data interface. Praxis also developed the web-based Network Control Center (NCC) for the ODTML system, which provides spacecraft tasking and data distribution to ODTML users via the World Wide Web.
The SCP is currently operational on board the TacSat-3 spacecraft. SCP units are installed and ready for launch on the STP-SIV and TacSat-4 spacecraft scheduled for launch in September and November of 2010, respectively. Praxis has demonstrated the ODTML system with a variety of sensors for Department of Defense (DoD) organizations over the first year of TacSat-3 operations and plans for operational demonstrations and tests once the other satellites have launched. ODTML ground entry points are available in Alexandria, VA and Dadeo, Guam. Praxis was responsible for total ODTML system design, development, and test under an ONR SBIR.
